Safeguarding children, young people, families and staff

Safeguarding children, young people, families and staff

Here at YMCA we’re on a journey to ensure we lead the way as a child-safe organisation.

Every year we work with thousands of children and young people in Auckland and the Waikato via a range of YMCA programmes and services. The welfare of children and young people is paramount to our work and at the heart of everything we do.

As an organisiation working with children and young people, we believe it’s important to do our part to protect vulnerable children.

Safeguarding is everybody's responsibility

The YMCA Auckland and Waikato network has taken a proactive step to reaffirm its commitment to child safety by becoming New Zealand’s first accredited Safeguarding Children organisation through the internationally-renowned Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF)

Safeguarding is a fundamental part of our culture and one we wish to share with all of our customers and members. To support this we have:

  • A designated Safeguarding Manager
  • Clear policies and procedures that aim to keep our customers and staff safe
  • Mandatory safeguarding training for all staff.

On this page you will find links to our policies, staff/volunteer code of conduct and other information as we progress on our safeguarding journey.

Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy is our overarching policy. You can download a copy from this webpage or request a hard copy from any YMCA reception or by emailing the Safeguarding Manager.

We encourage any parent/carer or young person with a concern relating to their or another person’s safety or wellbeing in a YMCA facility to share their concerns. This can be done via:

a  ) speaking to a member of staff in person; or

b  ) contacting the YMCA Safeguarding Manager:
