YMCA Swim Schools in Auckland has received a Quality Swim Schools award at the 2017 Swimming New Zealand Awards.

The Quality Swim Schools award, presented held at a ceremony at Ellerslie Events Centre on April 8, acknowledges outstanding performance from swim schools around the country.

YMCA Swim Schools in Auckland has worked hard over the past three years to become an industry leader by placing a strong emphasis on teaching water safety within its learn to swim programmes.

YMCA also aims to break down barriers to swimming and water safety lessons by providing affordable or subsidised classes to communities across Auckland. The subsidised programmes have provided more families with access to aquatic education for their children. Over 10,000 students have participated in YMCA Swim School lessons in the past year.

A range of programmes and classes, including pre-school therapy classes, high need adult private sessions and aquatic programmes for people with a medical or mobility issue, ensures YMCA caters for the broad needs of clients. YMCA Auckland has also developed a strong relationship with Halberg Disabiltiy Foundation and are the only swim school in New Zealand to have made the No Exceptions Training (NETS) mandatory for all staff.

YMCA’s Learn to Swim programmes focus heavily on achieving goals and the evaluation of each student’s results. Swim level goals are clear with simple progressions and a strong emphasis on excellent technique. YMCA Swim Schools in Auckland provide swimming and water safety sessions for babies through to adults, and have strong squad programmes and specialised group sessions for preschools and schools. The four Swim Schools across Auckland have outstanding tri squads and offer a wide range of additional programs like Safe Boating and Whanau Nui.

Swimming and water safety sessions are available for babies through to adults across four sites in Auckland: Onehunga War Memorial Pool, Lagoon Pool and Leisure Centre (Panmure), Glen Innes Pool and Leisure Centre and Cameron Pool and Leisure Centre (Mt Roskill).
