Term 2 has seen the pilot of our new Y-Bots Programme at the YMCA after school care at Sunnybrae Normal School and Warkworth School.

Along with Y-Active, our sports literacy programme - Y-Bots, was created to cater to those children aged between 5-11 years, whose parents are working and are unable to take them to recreation classes. This means they do not miss out on extracurricular activities as they are delivered onsite at school alongside our after school care programme.

Developed by Kevin Zhong, one of the OSCAR Operations Supervisors for the YMCA, the programme is designed to introduce children to coding and robotics. Combining maths, teamwork and problem solving, children have been working together to learn about coding, and its use in everyday applications. Children are also starting to code small ball robots to follow instructions.

While the pilot has only been going a few weeks, feedback has been really positive, with a parent saying their kid was buzzing after the first class and is really looking forward to the next session.

Term 3 will see the programme across all our Auckland school regions and will also be delivered in our Waikato region.

We cannot wait to introduce Y-Bots into more schools and see the excitement and enthusiasm of our tamariki as they learn new skills through this programme.
