Our out of school care programmes in provide a safe, fun space for children to attend outside of school hours.
We strive to help all children reach their full potential in mind, body and spirit. We do this through a range of activities, from cooking and crafts, to sports and role play. We also encourage communication, teamwork and help children develop social skills by teaching the core YMCA values of Caring, Respect, Responsibility and Honesty.
We provide a light afternoon tea which changes daily. This always includes fruit or vegetables along with sandwiches, crackers or popcorn. Taking into consideration children's allergies or restrictions and catering accordingly.
WINZ subsidies are available to parents who qualify. Please note that parents/caregivers that are applying for Work and Income subsidies must come into our local YMCA North Shore Recreation Centre on 5 Akoranga Drive, Northcote to complete their booking.

YMCA is New Zealand's first and only Child-Safe accredited organisation obtained by the ACF - Australian Childhood Foundation. Safeguarding is everybody's responsibility and here at the Y we are leading from the front to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children, young people, families and staff
As a not-for-profit organisation the YMCA is a charity. We are committed to strengthening families and youth development. Any surpluses made by the YMCA are reinvested back into the community through our causes. We also provide Fee Assistance to individuals that are not able to use our services due to financial hardship.
When we run Before / After Care or Holiday Programmes from the school's premises we make sure that our programmes are affordable. We are here to help and work alongside the school to make sure that the needs of our community are met. We also have WINZ subsidies available to assist.
Our programme is approved by MSD - Ministry of Social Development. This means our programme meets certain standards for approval and is regularly audited for quality assurance purposes. We are fully transparent and also share our MSD audit reports with the school.
To ensure the safety and quality of the programme we operate under strict ratios. A minimum of 2 staff per programme. There is 1 staff to 10 kids and 1 staff to every 6 to 8 kids for trip-based activities. For water based activities we have 1 staff to every 4 kids.
We take full responsibility of all the administration required to run the programmes. This includes bookings, parent communication, WINZ processes, recruitment, on-going training, record keeping, financial, audits etc. We also keep the school and parents in the loop where required.
"Students are eager to attend the programme as shown by their enthusiasm to run to the hall as soon as school finishes. The team running the programme are pleasant, caring and relate well to the pupils in their care. It is a great service provided for our working parents who really appreciate that their children are being looked after in a safe, caring and interesting environment."
"YMCA and Hamilton West School have developed and maintained a close relationship, and work hard to complement each other’s’ aims and objectives. I can nominate students in need from the school to receive free access to before or after school care and/or the YMCA Holiday Programme. This very generous offer shows that YMCA is about helping people in the community, including those who are vulnerable and need a helping hand. It’s my pleasure to acknowledge YMCA as a high quality organisation, well led and people-oriented."
"YMCA has excellent systems for communication and have always kept our school and parent community well informed regarding what is happening with the programme. The programme is well staffed with appropriate ratios. Our parents are very pleased with the quality of the programme provided for their children. I have no hesitation endorsing the YMCA programmes."
"Please pass on my regards to the team at North Shore. I walked away confident that the centre and the programmes are doing everything they can to make sure that it is a safe and welcoming place for children, and that parents’ and guardians’ evaluation and feedback is respected and taken into consideration."
