Swimming is one of the most important skills a person can learn – after all, New Zealand is a nation of water babies! If you or your children want to learn to swim, give us a call on 527 3260 to talk to one of our friendly swim school staff.
The team at Glen Innes Pool & Leisure Centre managed by YMCA run swimming lessons for all ages and abilities. Swimming school lessons take place in our heated indoor pools and have a specially designed teaching pool for little ones.
We aim to achieve a positive and supportive environment where all swimmers have the ability to develop to their full potential, while providing a fun, safe and inclusive experience where you and your little ones can learn to swim.
It's never to late to learn to swim
To ensure you receive the highest teaching quality our swim teachers receive on-going training, are AUSTSWIM qualified and are police checked. We have a variety of different teachers to suit your needs.
We understand that schedules can be busy, that's why we operate swimming lessons 7days a week. With a number of different options available we are sure to have a class that suits you.
Maximising potential and seeing swimmers progress is important to us. We aim to keep our instructor to student ratios as low as possible to ensure the best learning results.
YMCA Swim Schools have been recognised recipients for a number of AUSTSWIM Aotearoa awards in 2015 and 2016. Awards include; Swim Centre of the Year, Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety, Teacher of Infant and Preschool and Presenter of the Year. We also won the Outstanding Swim School Award for 2018 from the NZ Swim Coaches and Teachers Association.
Before you begin lessons with us we offer a free assessment to ensure your child is in the right level for their development. Throughout the programme children are continually assessed and will be moved up once they have achieved the level goals requirements.
No matter what the weather, we have indoor heated pools perfect for swimming all year round. Our purpose built facilities are designed for ease of use with baby change tables and family changing rooms situated readily on poolside
"We have been exceptionally lucky to be able to participate in the Glen Innes YMCA Access and Inclusion swim classes for the last 2 terms. My son spent year after year attending group classes at a different swim school. In that time he didn't move levels at all. He loves being in the water but having gross motor and learning difficulties, regular classes never met his needs. After looking for other options I came across the YMCA Access and Inclusion swim classes at Glen Innes. I was dancing for joy when I found out they could accommodate my son with 1:1 lessons especially for children with additional needs. After 2 lessons my son was doing (his own version) of freestyle. By the middle of the first term he had enough confidence and skill to be able to participate in the school swimming event for the first time. He is now learning to breathe properly and he is much more comfortable on his back in water which has been tricky since birth. Every week I am grateful for the huge strides he is taking. Not only is swimming therapeutic but he is learning where he never did before. The swim school is caring and holistic in approach, ensuring water safety is covered as well as correcting strokes. I can highly recommend this amazing scheme. "
