What will I need to bring to the gym?

Bring everything you normally would bring when you visit the gym. A personal sweat towel is mandatory for all gym users. We also recommend bringing your own drink bottle to stay hydrated while you workout without using the drinking fountains.

We are limiting the use of shared equipment wherever possible. If you have a Yoga Mat, a Foam Roller, Exercise Bands that you would like to use for your workout please bring these with you for personal use only.

Will anything be different when I come back?

There will be some changes to get used to as we adapt to a new way of life at Level 2. We ask that all members show caring and patience with staff and other members as we work towards a safe exercise environment for all. You will notice new systems and processes in place at your centre.

The following rules must be followed at all times:

Contact tracing – anyone visiting our facility is required to use the Check in 19 system to check in and check out of the facility each visit

Cleaning and Hygiene – Stay home if you are sick, wash hands before and after your workout, bring a sweat towel, spray and wipe all equipment after use

Physical distancing – A minimum of 2m spacing is mandatory for group classes and personal training and recommended in all other areas of the facility.

Can I get a spot during level 2?

No, spotting violates the physical distancing requirements to keep safe in the gym. Our trainers will be available to help in emergency situations but we ask that all members adjust the load they use for each exercise to ensure that spotting will not be required for now.

Will all group fitness classes be running?

Group fitness classes will be phased back in as we get used to life at level 2. Please check your centre web page for details on what classes will be on at your centre.

How will YMCA do contact tracing?

Contact tracing is compulsory for anyone who enters our centre. We are using a contact less system called Check in 19 to comply with contact tracing requirements. Using Check in 19 is easy.

Checking in: take a picture of the QR code located at the entrance to the centre with your phone and enter your contact details

Checking out: simply click the ‘checkout’ button in your phone browser when you leave

Physical Distancing

What are the physical distancing guidelines while in the club?

In group classes and personal training we require all members to maintain a physical distance of 2m. In all other areas, we require a physical distance of a minimum of 1.5m.

We have designed floor plans for each of our spaces that account for the physical distancing requirements outlined by government. These floor plans have included moving some equipment and re-configuring our layout to ensure adequate spacing. In some cases this may mean that a capacity limit has to be placed on certain areas in order to maintain safe physical distancing.

  • On top of our regular cleaning roster, we will have YMCA staff cleaning all open areas of the gym throughout every day and completing a deep clean every night after closing.
  • We use a high grade disinfectant that prevents transmission of any virus and bacteria including COVID-19
  • YMCA is requiring that all members disinfect equipment after use and is providing additional paper towels and hand sanitizer available in all centres

Check your local centre page for more details.

How much distance do I need between me and members of staff?

In group classes you must maintain 2m physical distance between yourself, other members and the instructor. In all other areas please maintain a minimum of 1.5m distance at all times.

Will there be capacity limits?

Yes, in order to comply with physical distancing requirements all areas of the facility will have a strict capacity limits. In some cases you may be asked to wait for another member to leave a space before entering. You may also be required to book in for classes and even workouts should capacity become an issue.

Check your local centre page for more details.

Will I need to book in for every class or gym session?

In order to comply with physical distancing some activities may require you to book in advance. This depends on demand and the size of the space the activity occurs. Certain classes will have limited numbers to maintain physical distancing. Please contact your centre for more information on which classes need to be booked in advance.

Check your local centre page for more details.

How do I book in for a class?

To book in for a class simply call or email the centre.

Have you changed the layout to encourage distancing?

Yes, we have made adjustments to the layout of our facility to ensure that we can support physical distancing by design. You’ll notice a lot more space in the facility. Some pieces of equipment may have been removed in order to create this space. You may also find bits of equipment in spaces that used to be empty areas. Check your centres landing page for more information on the layout changes we’ve made to support physical distancing.

Is coming to the gym considered a gathering?

Thanks to the Exercise Association of New Zealand we can confirm that coming to the gym is not considered a gathering. The capacity of a group exercise class is defined by how many people can safely fit in the space while maintaining physical distancing requirements of 2m. A gathering has been clarified as going somewhere together for the purpose of gathering with others. Attending the gym, including attending classes you are visiting individually for the purpose of exercise. It just so happen there are some really cool people in class at the same time (2m away from you).

Membership

When will my membership payments restart?

No action is required by you. Membership payments will resume once we re-open. Due to the circumstances of our sudden closure, many of our members had a payment go out in the days leading up to closure. We have considered those payments and applied a credit to your membership to ensure that you receive every day that you paid for prior to closure. We have made the decision to keep our direct debit days and amounts as normal, which means that you may members will receive some free membership time. Although this will have an impact on our revenue, we have made this decision to support your journey back to health and fitness and the new normal.  We welcome anyone who chooses to make a donation to acknowledge our support.
