Mt Albert took out three of the five prestigious YMCA national awards at its recent convention in Napier.
The Y That Catches The Eye; was awarded for FREE Group Exercise classes held in Rocket Park during February. Participants topped out at 135 for just one of the classes.
Strengthening Families Award; this was received for YMCA’s weekend of Community Passion. The weekend included Christmas celebration activities during one weekend in November and events included, Y-Kids children's dance show, Raise Up and Represent youth dance party, the annual Eden Albert’s School Cultural Festival, and to complete the weekend, YMCA also played a part in the Mt Albert Baptist church’s event - Christmas carols in the park held on Sunday evening.
The aim was to provide a weekend of activities that would allow something for everyone and an opportunity to bring the Mt Albert community together in celebration; to strengthen family ties and community spirit.
Attendance numbers, smiles on faces and the shear number of families who took time out together from their busy lives to attend and support their children, as well as enjoy the fun showed the complete success of the weekend. In the short space of approximately 60 hours, over 10,440 community members participated in activities and experienced the YMCA vision.
There was no doubt that the weekend left Mt Albert community passionate about their neighborhood and with a true sense of belonging.
Leading By Example; Centre Manager Jill Gibson was awarded the Leading By Example award for her dedication and commitment to her team and the Y. Jill modestly says, she is just doing her job!
