23 March 2011 - It's time to bring community support back into an iconic Panmure centre.
The YMCA Panmure Lagoon Stadium was once a community hub, providing a space for a number of sports and activities.
But recently it's been underutilised. |
The YMCA Ellerslie Recreation Centre has teamed up with the TableSide Charitable Trust and they're mucking in this Sunday to give the place a makeover.
"This is one heck of a project," trust community director Denise Krum says.
"It could be our biggest one yet."
The trust supports organisations in their community-oriented ventures.
YMCA and TableSide are asking people to come along and volunteer their services.
Almost all of the stadium will be given a fresh coat of paint to really "spruce" the place up.
Parts of the upstairs function room will be stripped of its carpet so the wooden floors can be sanded. The dance studio will be given a makeover so it can host classes.
One of the most important parts of the makeover is to fix the outdoor lighting so the netball court can be used at night.
A qualified electrician is needed to volunteer.
They are also looking for tables and chairs for the function room and a tennis net.
"Fifteen to 20 years ago it was a hub of the community. We want to recreate nostalgia," YMCA Ellerslie Recreation Centre manager Bruce Davey says. He describes the upgrade as not just the launch of a new stadium, but the launch of a new relationship between YMCA and the charitable trust "that will benefit the community".
Panmure Lagoon Stadium manager Ryan Wetherill says the stadium is used by a range of clubs and leagues.
The makeover will be held between 9.30am and 5pm on Sunday. Volunteers are welcome, even if it's just for an hour or two.
Children will be holding a bake sale with all proceeds going to the Christchurch earthquake fund – so bring your gold coins.
The stadium is at 29 Lagoon Drive.
