Vision, Mission And Values

The Y is a place where you can be yourself, feel comfortable with who you are and enjoy a sense of belonging. Your local YMCA is not just a place to go; it's a culture, a feeling and a place of support.
YMCA Values

Our Vision

“We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities”

That’s why we are here, it’s what gets us out of bed in the morning, it’s what makes us work hard and feel great about what we do. It’s what we have been doing for over 150 years.

We want to

Operate our centres optimally in order to enhance and expand the programmes we offer

Encourage our communities to be more active

Provide a creative environment for our youth

Improve the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders

Our Mission

“We lead the way as the most respected provider of services for people to reach their full potential in body, mind and spirit”

The longstanding international YMCA tag line of ‘Body Mind Spirit’, has never been stronger in our centres. It’s represented in the three sides of the triangle in the YMCA logo and along with our values underlines everything that we do. We teach new skills and develop peoples’ minds, encourage activity and health (body) and this all in turn, with our warm and motivating environment lifts peoples’ spirits. Easy!

Our Core Values

The cornerstones that great foundations are built on; these are the values that we believe in:

Caring

Be considerate of others; be helpful, thoughtful, compassionate and kind.

Respect

Treat others as you would have them treat you; value the worth of every person, including yourself.

Honesty

Be truthful, open and sincere; act with integrity in all that you do.

Responsibility

Do what is right, what you ought to do: own the task at hand; be accountable for your behaviour and obligations.

"One of my proudest achievements is thanks to the YMCA, particularly the staff who believed in me to start a programme myself. When I went to my supervisors at 17 with the idea to start a Raise Up holiday programme they encouraged me and gave me the assistance I needed ”
